Jack’s Sprinkle
Friday is my nephew Jack’s first birthday! Please join me in wishing a happy early birthday to Jack! As we posted yesterday, leading up to his special day we are revisiting the fun celebrations we threw in his honor prior to his birth. Today we are sharing the details of the baby sprinkle I cohosted with Mallory’s friend Hillary in honor of the future Jack.
What is a baby sprinkle? A baby sprinkle is a type of shower to celebrate a family’s second child. Instead of an elaborate event where a first-time mom is showered with gifts, it’s a more casual, lower-key gathering where a mom-to-be gets sprinkled with just the necessities.
In early April 2019, Hillary was incredibly gracious to open her home to about a dozen Sprinkle guests. We took the term “Sprinkle” very literally. Rain showers and actual sprinkles were the theme of the celebration and we used our Sprinkle invitations to guide the color scheme. We served prosecco with bits of cotton candy on top for rain clouds and Hillary created a gorgeous cheese and charcuterie table including delicious Trader Joe’s flatbread pizzas straight out of the oven.
For dessert, I created a custom sprinkle mix (baby blue, white, mint green, and gray) using sprinkles I purchased in bulk from the Layer Cake Shop. I then purchased a plain white round cake layered with raspberry filling from Metropolitan Market, plain donuts from Top Pot Donuts, plain light blue macarons and mini vanilla-frosted cupcakes from Trophy Cupcakes, and Delizza mini eclairs and decorated all of them with the custom sprinkle mix. I also made Smitten Kitchen’s confetti cookies using the same sprinkle mix (they were delicious!). Guests took home the mini cupcakes as a party favor in these cute boxes tied with color coordinated ribbon.
Did you know that on Amazon you can set up a baby registry that allows for group gifting of an item? This is what we did for Mallory’s jogging stroller. Given that Jack was Mallory’s second child and second boy, when I asked her what she really needed to purchase in advance of his birth, she responded with a double stroller. A very extravagant gift for any one sprinkle attendee, Amazon’s group gifting feature allowed guests to contribute to Mallory’s new double stroller in lieu of bringing a gift.
Hillary and I also included an insert with the Sprinkle invitations asking guests to bring baby books in lieu of cards. Who doesn’t like to have a well-stocked bookshelf for their babies before they arrive?
Have you attended or hosted a baby sprinkle? How did you make the mother-to-be feel special? And, if you missed it, yesterday we posted all the specifics of Jack’s fun gender reveal brunch.
