Two Fun Walks To Take As a Family
Are you in a walk rut? We have always taken a ton of walks, scooter and bike rides as a family and now more than ever during the pandemic. Joey loves to bike, scooter and be outside. I love the easy entertainment it provides us all and the extra exercise is nice especially without gyms or classes to attend at the moment. I dread the days we aren’t able to get outside for a walk due to weather; it makes for a very long day. Given we are in our fourth (?!) month of social distancing, I realized we were in a bit of a walk rut – taking the same walks day in and day out and everyone needed a little change of scenery. So, for all you Seattleites, we recently switched it up and found two new routes that we love and wanted to share with you.
The trails behind the University of Washington Horticulture Center are so great for walking and exploring with kids. I hadn’t been back there since jogging through it in college! There are multiple different trails with water views just about everywhere you look allowing for plenty of opportunities for the kids to explore. Joey loves all of the different paths and hunting for wildlife; we even spotted a bald eagle and a bunch of turtles on our first visit. He now refers to this walk as a “big secret adventure” and is never ready to leave.
The second route we have been enjoying, Joe especially, starts at the top of University of Washington at 17th and 45th. We run up the hill with the jogging stroller (not so fun), show Joe where I lived in college, and then let him choose his scooter path down through campus. It is just about all down hill but not too steep; perfect for young bikers. There are so many different twisty ramps, little bridges, cool buildings and different ways to adventure down through the school grounds. We have yet to take the same route down and each time we get a “this is so much fun!” It ends up being a great work out for Chris and I and it’s Joe loves it – win win!
These walks or runs are longer than your average neighborhood stroll so plan ahead and bring all the snacks, water and wipes in the stroller! Any more fun walk ideas? Leave them in the comments below.
