Attend a Virtual Cocktail Class

Its Friday and you deserve a cocktail. So why not learn to make one virtually? We have a fun, COVID-friendly activity recommendation for you: attend a virtual cocktail class!

Last week Ryan and I attended a virtual cocktail class that we purchased from Sam and Emma’s school auction. As part of purchasing the tickets, cocktail supplies were dropped off on our doorstep (AMAZING!) and a Zoom link was provided. At the designated time, we simply signed on with a handful of other school parents and spent about 45 minutes learning how to make two cocktails – a Vodka Smash (my favorite!) and Planter’s Punch, the recipes for which are provided below.

The provider of the online course we attended is aptly named “Virtual Cocktail Class” with all details available at www.virtualcocktailclass.com. Their tagline is “Your crew. Your crib. Your cocktails.” It is completely customizable and once you choose the cocktails you want to learn, they will send you an ingredient list and Zoom link. The virtual cocktail class was a great couples activity and would make a really fun way to celebrate a birthday when you cannot physically get together for a drink! You could drop off the cocktail ingredients and some salty bar snacks on the doorstep of the birthday girl or boy and invite close friends to participate. Everyone can hangout on the Zoom link after the class is over to drink their two cocktails and catch up!

Vodka Smash

  • About 10 berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries)
  • 2 shots Vodka (Admittedly, I am a lightweight. While the recipe calls for two shots, I have since tried cutting it down to one. This allows me to stay up past 9pm without falling asleep on the couch.)
  • 3/4 shot simple syrup
  • 1 shot lemon juice
  • 6 oz. plain seltzer or soda water
  • Ice

In a pint or Collins glass, add about 10 blueberries (if using larger berries, reduce number). My favorite after trying blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries (all in the name of recipe testing of course!) was raspberries. A combination of berries would also be fantastic! Muddle the berries in the bottle of the glass with a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon. To the muddled berries, add 2 shots vodka, 3/4 shot simple syrup, and 1 shot lemon juice. Add a handful of ice and then top off the glass with seltzer water. Check out your pretty ombre cocktail, then stir and enjoy!

Planter’s Punch

  • 2 shots dark rum
  • 3/4 shot simple syrup
  • 1 shot lemon juice
  • 4 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Ice

Pardon the pun, but this cocktail does indeed pack a real punch! To a cocktail shaker, add two shots dark rum, 3/4 shot simple syrup, 1 shot lemon juice, and 4 large dashes of Angostura bitter. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice and give a good shake. To serve, fill a cocktail glass with ice and then pour the contents of your cocktail shaker over the ice. Enjoy!

If you decide to sign up for a virtual cocktail class, please let us know. We would love to hear what you thought of this COVID-friendly activity. Cheers and TGIF!
