Gingerbread Houses

With many of the fun Christmas activities shut down this year, we are making the most out of festive activities at home… like gingerbread houses! It’s an easy activity the kids love and it takes relatively low effort on my part especially because I buy the houses pre-built. Just about every store carries some sort of gingerbread house kit these days so just keep your eyes open. This Gingerbread mansion that Costco carried is my personal fav but we tried to get a few more and they seem to be sold out everywhere now! Target also carries a cute prebuilt gingerbread house but be warned it does not come with candy. On that note, gingerbread houses are a great way to get rid of old Halloween candy that is still sitting around the house. Joe’s favorite part of his gingerbread house is a chocolate corn on the cob he used as a chimney left over from Emma’s Halloween stash….

OR, if you really want to go all in this year, you can take a page out of my mom’s book. You might have seen me post about this on Instagram the other day, but my mom built log houses with us every year. She actually baked every single gingerbread log to make these log cabins with all four of us kids and it blows my mind! Not to mention, our old dear nanny told me that our mom used to drive ALL over town finding all the different fun candy for us because obviously Amazon wasn’t available for everything we wanted 30 years ago. Can you imagine? Ugh, this makes me feel old (and lazy). Clearly, I don’t have this in me so i’ll be sticking to my pre-built gingerbread mansion but check out the log cabin directions and old pictures below!

On the other hand, if you are trying to avoid the mess and sugar high, there are lots of other fun gingerbread house activities out there. My girlfriend sent me this giant gingerbread play house and I know my boys would LOVE it. They love any sort of fort, house, thing they can hide in BUT I’m pretty sure Chris will have a heart attack if another giant box arrives on our door step so there’s that. There are also play-doh, sticker, lego and glitter gingerbread houses to make… tons of options out there for easy entertainment at home!

Happy gingerbread housing!
